Betaworks
Betaworks is a startup studio that builds and invests in next generation internet companies. Founded in 2008, betaworks is a company of builders. A tightly linked network of ideas, people, capital, products and data brought together in imaginative ways to build out a more connected world. At first glance we seem to do many things. But first and foremost, we’re builders, seeking to create a more sustainable innovation model. The more we build, the more we learn, the more we get ideas for peripheral things, all related, connected — in a loosely coupled network of products and companies. betaworks is structured as a company– a single company that owns larger pieces of the things it has built and smaller pieces of the things it has invested in. It operates as a network: a tightly linked network of ideas, people, capital, and data united to build out a more inspired and useful connected world. betaworks makes seed-stage investments in this ecosystem. To us, seed investing means “first money in.” Our typical investment size is $150,000-200,000. We always invest as part of a syndicate of angels and early stage VCs. Our requirements from an investment perspective are simple, though narrow. Investments must be early stage, heavily tech focused, and have a working (public or private) prototype. We are a powerpoint-free zone. We build and work closely with companies that we view as core to our vision, examples include: [Summize/Twitter Search](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/summize/), [bitly](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/bitly-2), [TweetDeck](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/tweetdeck), [Chartbeat](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/chartbeat). And more recently, [Digg](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/digg/), [Dots](http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/01/dots-the-most-beautiful-mobile-game-ive-ever-seen/), [Giphy](http://www.Giphy.com) and [Instapaper](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/Instapaper), which betaworks acquired in April of 2013. We attract the kind of people who could start their own company, but they don’t necessarily want to run a company. They’d rather be the co-founder of eight things than tied down for years as the sole founder of one. They’d rather build.

New York Angels
New York Angels is one of the largest and most active angel investment organizations. Founded in 2004 as the successor organization to the NYNMA (New York New Media Association) Angel Investor Program, New York Angels is a membership organization of over 110 active angel investors and early stage venture capital funds. The group meets monthly to screen and present early stage technology companies, and its members have invested over $100 million since 2002 into over 90 ventures. In April of 2017, PItchbook identified New York Angels as #3 in their list of the 8 top VCs funding seed rounds of New York-based companies. Among the NYA membership are nationally known angel investors including Esther Dyson and David S. Rose. The group has one full-time staff, reporting to an 11 person Board of Directors chaired by Brian S. Cohen. Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey is currently Program Director of New York Angels. Since 2012, the membership has increased by 66% and investment activity has grown by over 215%. New York Angels concentrates on early stage investments in the range of $100,000 – $1,000,000, although it has led deals as large as $2 million. It receives over 2,200 financing applications annually, from which it selects 12-16 companies each month for an in-person screening, where all members of New York Angels are invited to attend. The group meets again for an Investment Breakfast at the end of the month, where 2-4 opportunities present to the membership with a goal to close their current investment round within two months. The group is considered a leader in the growing field of organized angel investing. It was the first member of the national Angel Capital Association, hosted the ACA Summit conference in 2006, and was the initial test group for the now-standard gust (Angelsoft) funding platform. Membership as an investor in New York Angels is by invitation only, and members are required to commit to investing at least $50,000 annually in early stage technology deals, in addition to the group’s $3,500 annual membership dues. Requests for funding for entrepreneurial ventures may be self-submitted through the group’s website. New York Angels charges no fees to entrepreneurs.

Nucleus Adventure Capital
Born out of decades of friendship and investing, NAC was created to identify and support ground breaking innovation in the pursuit of a better world. We invest early and quickly, build relationships with founders and love to get our hands dirty to help our partners achieve their goals. Our fundamental investment philosophy has two tenets: 1) We believe that identifying and investing behind change – especially fundamental shifts in how the world works or what is possible – is key to capturing exponential returns 2) We believe that while early-stage investing can appear to be little more than random to the casual observer, subject matter expertise properly applied to evaluate uncommon opportunities tilts the power law in our favor As a result we like to stick to our knitting: we have had success and we continue to find incredible opportunities to work with smart and driven executive teams operating in markets that are going to be big in the consumer-touching space. Our approach is deliberately sector and vertical agnostic, and we’ve invested in businesses ranging from IoT to ice cream to space tourism to secure crypto wallets (and everything in between) but we believe our best investments come when we can understand the impact on the person at the end of the value-chain and what it’s worth to them, and that the combination is much, much bigger than the market understands. We evaluate hundreds of opportunities annually from sources public and private: private placements, portco spinoffs, syndicates, friendly VCs, accelerators, founder referrals, and plain old fashioned networking and shoe leather. We look for the combination of a team + product that is positioned to win the future as well as an access + opportunity that we believe gives asymmetrical upside – and then look to share the best of the best with partners who can contribute more than just capital.
