The Engine
The Engine, which was publicly announced on October 26, 2016, was built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prioritizing breakthrough ideas over early profit, The Engine represents an exciting new system for startup support, one that shortens the time from idea to investment, and from investment to impact. To fuel The Engine, MIT is seeking to attract hundreds of millions of dollars of support and to provide hundreds of thousands of square feet of space for entrepreneurs in Kendall Square and nearby communities, starting with 26,000 square feet in its Central Square headquarters. The Engine provides a physical space where an idea can begin to take shape. It also streamlines the legal processes and agreements required to get products to market. And it links entrepreneurs to “patient capital” from investors who share their vision of addressing big challenges with big ideas. The Engine will eventually support up to 60 locally based startups concurrently; these companies will participate in the accelerator for up to 12 months. The Engine will make meaningful investments that will allow participating startups to get off the ground quickly and operate long enough to prove their concepts’ viability. It will also provide business planning, legal, and administrative support. The Engine will require less equity than is typical, allowing founders to maintain more control over their companies and the ideas they’ve created. Through the Engine Room, The Engine will provide access to a wide network of lab space, specialized equipment, business guidance, and other resources, at MIT and beyond.

Comet Labs
Comet Labs is an early-stage intelligent machines venture capital fund based in San Francisco. We help startups scale, guide innovation, and generate discussion in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. We’re a venture fund and incubator founded in 2015. We invest in early stage artificial intelligence (AI) and deep technology companies transforming the world’s biggest industries. Our thesis is that AI and Robotics will revolutionize productivity in every vertical and unlock human potential. AI and machine learning technology have matured dramatically in just the past few years. The line of what is possible has been pushed back. However, it has become apparent that introducing AI to traditional industries requires a new and more collaborative approach. We started as a fund focused on investing in AI startups, but quickly understood that AI startups have little trouble raising money. Instead, they have a whole assortment of other common needs and challenges with building their businesses. That’s why we didn’t stop at the fund. We created the Labs programs, each providing an environment in which to build and grow companies. We partner with established industry brands to give startups access to vital resources and knowledge that otherwise would be out of reach. Together, we set up programs to help startups and partners discover new insights about how AI and robotics can transform industries like healthcare, agriculture, construction, transportation, and more. We’re always on the lookout for new thoughts and ideas about how AI will impact our society in the not-so-distant future. We’d love to hear yours.

Flashstarts is a Cleveland-based business startup accelerator and venture fund focused on unique and innovative uses of software and technology. Flashstarts provides the resources, capital and guidance necessary to support the earliest stage entrepreneurs. The Flashstarts Accelerator is powered by rapid cycles of feedback and iteration, customized guidance from coaches, an extensive network of mentors, and a team of talented interns. Our formal accelerator program runs for 12 weeks, and our third class begins in May of 2015. While we will review any team with any idea, our sweet spots are Enterprise IT (EIT) and Healthcare IT (HIT). For our 2014 summer accelerator class, we have defined six “R&D labs” filled with vertical-specific resources to give Flashstarts teams valuable expertise and access. Each lab has a robust network of resources, mentors and corporate partners for our startup teams to leverage. Our Cleveland location is home to a world-class healthcare ecosystem with top 10 hospitals, 700+ health-related companies and institutions, 230,000 workers, and has received $1.3 billion in recent investment. A $465 million, 1 million-square-foot Global Center for Health Innovation has opened in the Fall 2013. Flashstarts teams are ideally positioned to leverage these extraordinary assets. We are continuously seeking like-minded entrepreneurs with truly unique, breakthrough ideas that have the potential to change the world. We are also open to outstanding entrepreneurs even if they don’t have an idea – if you share our passion, we will help generate the idea. Our Venture Capital fund operates our startup accelerator and will create, fund and support 12 new software companies in 2014. The fund is currently open, with 50 units available to accredited investors. Interested investors can visit www.flashstarts.net.

Curious Minds
Founded in 2004, CuriousMinds starts technology companies. They brainstorm the fastest methods to tackle everything from internet security loopholes to unbalanced supply and demand in healthcare. Many of these methods require no more than a basic communication technology—the telephone. Whether fun or serious, all of their businesses present egalitarian solutions to traditional challenges. CuriousMinds continually breaks new technological ground while also breaking social, cultural, and financial barriers. Their partnerships range from Fortune 500 companies to online question-and-answer communities; their clients include bankable Hollywood stars as well as budding YouTube talent. They all find a niche within their telecommunications cloud. This commitment to equality is reflected internally. Their unique company structure blurs divisions between marketing and technology. Regardless of his or her role, every member of their tight-knit team is an entrepreneur first. They sound off different ideas, identify the promise in each, and build cohesive, revenue-generating platforms. Driven by a collective imagination, they engineer new twists on old interfaces and tend to focus on industries ripe for a technological disruption. At CuriousMinds, and since 2004, they have envisioned the telephone as being more than just for standard audio calls. CuriousMinds-incubated Companies are proud to call the majority of the 10 largest Internet sites “clients”, and will continue to spawn concepts that re-imagine internet and smartphone technologies.

At CommerceNet, they harness the power of the Internet to transform existing processes—making them better, faster, and more efficient. They do this by: -Finding the right talent and backing it -Tapping the collective intelligence to solve problems and improve decisions -Redefining processes to put more intelligence into software -Dramatically lowering transaction costs, creating new categories of products and services As a result, they’ve created a balanced portfolio of initiatives—long-term and short, high risk and sure thing, never been tried and retried at the right time, too theoretical to work and so obvious it must have been tried long ago. Currently, their two biggest passions are changing how Internet security is done and improving healthcare by industrializing therapy development. Both of these initiatives utilize the Internet to radically alter the status quo, introducing novel approaches to long-standing problems.

FLIP.Ventures
A new startup investment model – Forward Looking Intellectual Property Ventures (FLIP.Ventures). When funding a new tech idea or startup there are never better odds than 50/50. The idea will simply take hold or it won’t. However, if one looks at startups as whole, industry reports show 90% of them fail. Even though the 1-in-10 odds can pay off handsomely, all investing requires a strategy to beat the odds of failure and losses. At FLIP.Ventures we defy the odds. We are a very unique, one of a kind, startup investment syndication strategy. For example: What if a startup secured $5 million in funding, then ran out of money, stopped operating and then EXITED for $25m? It can be done, it has been done. Or maybe this one? Great idea, great company, market crash, financial markets dry up, everyone laid off and then the eventual bankruptcy- and then EXIT for $50m! It can be done, it has been done. Our formula is simple: 1. We assemble seed investment syndication groups (SISG). 2. The SISG is its own company investing in not one start-up but two at the same time. 3. The unique fact in this case is IF the best is always 50/50, then let’s leverage the risk across two startups. But the FLIP strategy does not stop there. 4. These two startups MUST conform to our very strict participation rules: a. We as a company and SISG participate in all management decisions, and; b. We assure the startup has a MINIMUM of 10 Defensive Patents(DP) protecting the startups innovations, and; c. The SISG goal is to provide seed, get the 10 DP’s filed and get to Proof of Concept (POC), and; d. The patents are NOT to file suits but to force market leverage so the company can be form strategic partnerships and then be FLIPPED (now you see where FLIP comes in). 5. The very worst case is – regardless of the outcome of the startup the Intellectual Property secures the investment. 6. In conclusion, as an SISG participant you get twice the opportunity for your investment to succeed and twice the security there is some form of exit at the end of the road. FLIP.Ventures has perfected this model. Our group not only has the startups with amazing IP, but also we have the very unique track record of being able to push through ground breaking patents in 11 months’ time, where most companies hope for 3 to 5 years for a patent to grant. We prove our expertise at this achievement almost quarter after quarter. If the startups are winners and stand up on their own, then great for the SISG and FLIP.Ventures. If both startups win, then it’s a double win. One win and one loses, then there is still an exit to be had of some kind for the losing startup. Even if both startups fail to mature then the IP always presents an exit strategy. We specialize in ventures where there is from $1.5m to $20m for full POC with the IP and then look to stand them up, prove them out and then FLIP for $200m to $1b or more. We promise you will FLIP when you see what FLIP. Ventures does and how we do it. Send an email or message to dialog with our team. If we are a match for you and your investment dollars and you are a match for the type of SISG member we seek as well, then let’s do this FLIP together.

The Incubation Factory
The Incubation Factory has a nearly twenty-year history in identifying, accelerating, launching and governing early stage companies. By institutionalizing lessons learned from the Inc. 500 successes and applying those principles to the tech-transfer industry, the company properly addresses the needs and solves the inefficiencies of the current system. Using techniques prevalent amongst the fastest growing companies in the country, and then improving upon these based on real-world lessons, The Incubation Factory has successfully established two tranches of portfolio companies and is in the process of creating a third tranche. 1993 – 2003: TIF Tech Fund evolved from Anthony, Allan & Quinn, Inc. (“AAQ”) which was founded in 1993 by AAQ’s current CEO Dan Schmitt and two partners. AAQ successfully launched eight companies from 1993 to 2003, three of which grew rapidly enough to qualify for the Inc. 500 List of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in America. In 1997, recognizing a tremendous need and opportunity for streamlining back office claim processing for the healthcare industry, AAQ founded Advanced Business Fulfillment (“ABF”) to serve insurance companies, managed care organizations, HMOs and third-party administrators. By 2003, ABF ranked No. 23 nationally and No. 1 in Missouri on the Inc. 500 List. In July 2003, ABF was sold to publicly-traded WebMD for $260 million. Through this experience AAQ performed an in-depth study of their Inc. 500 peer group, analyzing what made these companies successful as well as why other companies fail. These findings created an opportunity to introduce a paradigm shift in the innovation process, as it was discovered that companies make the same mistakes and missed out on the same opportunities across industries and businesses.
