Ohio TechAngels Fund
Ohio TechAngels Funds are a group of for-profit angel investor funds that invest in highly promising early stage Ohio-based C-Corporations in IT, advanced materials, and life sciences. More than 340 high net-worth accredited investors contribute to the funds, making it the largest angel network in North America. While OTAF founder, John Huston, is the Manager of each fund, TechColumbus serves as the Managing Member of each fund and provides key administrative and entrepreneur support. The Ohio Third Frontier Program co-invests in the funds, and OTAF also has a strong network of collaborators and partners. OTAF’s mission is to “Turn great ideas into prized companies to build entrepreneurial wealth”. To-date, OTAF and its sidecars have invested $28 MM in 44 companies that have raised $355 MM from other sources. Four companies have achieved positive exits and 10 companies were complete losses. The 30 active companies currently employ 421 people with average salaries of $87,275, and are generating about $50 MM in annual revenues. The typical OTAF investee is in the late “Seed”, “Start-up” or “Early” lifecycle stages – depending on the industry. We prefer software companies to have demonstrated commercial feasibility by revenue generation. To qualify for investment consideration from OTAF, the company must be (or plan to be) the following: 1) Based in Ohio (any region) 2) Organized as a C-Corp legal entity, incorporated in Delaware or Ohio 3) Part of one of these subsectors: IT, Life Sciences, or Advanced Materials How are OTAF investments structured? OTAF IV will make 14 initial investments of $325,000, and seven of these companies will receive follow-on investments of $175,000. Individual OTAF members who are interested in increasing their exposure may write checks and invest alongside the fund as “sidecars”. Our typical round size is $750,000 to $2.5 MM, and if this is more than OTAF and sidecars will fund directly, then we will formulate a syndication strategy to socialize the company with our investment partners around Ohio and the Midwest. OTAF uses a standard term sheet and deal documents based on the NCVA model term sheet for participating convertible preferred equity.

We are value-added investors basically limiting our investments to areas where the team has personal experience, industry connections and specific expertise in the marketplace, business processes, customers, competition, technology and/or regulatory environments. We will be hands-on, active participants (with Board or Advisor seats) in the management and operation of the portfolio companies and any incremental compensation which is earned or provided as a result of such services will be contributed to the fund as well. We will focus on industries (insurance, automotive, media and marketing, data management and analytics, customer satisfaction management, technology and education) where we have spent many years working and where we know both the past, present and hopefully the future directions that these industries will take. We believe there are great opportunities which the radical changes in these industries (created by disruptive innovators) will create for fast movers and early adopters with the experience to offset the most critical risks that these new enterprises pose which are (a) the execution risks that accompany rapid growth combined with (b) the need for quick decision making in an environment of constant change.

Collide Village Accelerator Program
The Collide Village is a milestone driven accelerator where we invest in startups, teach them about evidence based entrepreneurship, and help founders brand and commercialize their innovations. The Village offers each accepted company: – An initial seed fund of $25K in return for 8% of company’s equity – Strong Customer Development and Validation focus – Access to an exclusive network of Mentors, Advisors, and Investors – Free office space for duration of the program Our 3-month program focuses on customer development, validation, value proposition canvas, MVP (minimum viable product) definition, consumer and business marketing, branding, go-to market strategy and fundraising. It Takes a Village to Raise a Start-up Mentors, partners, investors, university alliances, and corporate patrons make up our village. This network prides itself on providing our start-ups with the support they need. This is both our network and our village! An exclusive list of top-level mentors from across the nation chooses to donate time, knowledge, and experience to our start-ups. These mentors have demonstrated success and lived a life of their own in the start-up world. They drive our Village to the next level. A key differentiating factor of the CVAP is that start-ups perform extensive customer validation before investing in further product development. After market validation, start-ups work with top-notch market research firms and expert branding mentors. They develop go-to-market and marketing and branding strategies. Start-ups complement their product understanding with meaningful consumer and market insights. Our supporters are vested in CVAP’s success. They are industry leading technology, business services, and legal firms. In addition, top VC firms and local and national angel investors work with CVAP. The Village provides networking opportunities to help you find potential partners and experts who can help propel your start-up to success. Goal Driven We are redefining how accelerators conclude their programs. CVAP is milestone driven, meaning we measure a start-up’s success against its goals. An investor’s view of a company as “I’ll know when I see the product” isn’t a formal way of assessing project maturity or quantifying risk. We provide these investors a common language that communicates objectives to start-ups. We do this by defining Investment Readiness Level (IRL). IRL is a bridge that connects the capital-efficient Lean Startup process and the capital-raising process for founders. Seed Funding? We invest $25k in seed stage funds. With this funding, start-ups perform first hand customer validations. They also develop a strong marketing message while working with market research partners and some of the best agencies in Dallas, TX. Pitch Day? The accelerator world overuses Pitch Days, but we don’t entirely believe in how they are structured. Instead we embrace a philosophy of invite-only investor audience. This allows you to focus on the task at hand without distraction. Our last cohort’s pitch day had more than 50% of accredited investors present along with key industry advocates, startup connectors and local corporate patrons. Can you make a noise? If you can make some noise, we can help amplify your message. The Village works with media partners to help make the right level of needed noise as part of our go-to market strategy. Benefits? You can’t put a dollar value on the advice and support you will receive throughout the program. But you can expect more benefits including legal advice, hosting credits, discounts from local establishments and other valuable resources. A partner for life! Collide Village will take an 8% equity in your company in exchange for our investment, network, advice, mentorship and access to our priceless Village.
