Betaworks
Betaworks is a startup studio that builds and invests in next generation internet companies. Founded in 2008, betaworks is a company of builders. A tightly linked network of ideas, people, capital, products and data brought together in imaginative ways to build out a more connected world. At first glance we seem to do many things. But first and foremost, we’re builders, seeking to create a more sustainable innovation model. The more we build, the more we learn, the more we get ideas for peripheral things, all related, connected — in a loosely coupled network of products and companies. betaworks is structured as a company– a single company that owns larger pieces of the things it has built and smaller pieces of the things it has invested in. It operates as a network: a tightly linked network of ideas, people, capital, and data united to build out a more inspired and useful connected world. betaworks makes seed-stage investments in this ecosystem. To us, seed investing means “first money in.” Our typical investment size is $150,000-200,000. We always invest as part of a syndicate of angels and early stage VCs. Our requirements from an investment perspective are simple, though narrow. Investments must be early stage, heavily tech focused, and have a working (public or private) prototype. We are a powerpoint-free zone. We build and work closely with companies that we view as core to our vision, examples include: [Summize/Twitter Search](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/summize/), [bitly](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/bitly-2), [TweetDeck](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/tweetdeck), [Chartbeat](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/chartbeat). And more recently, [Digg](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/digg/), [Dots](http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/01/dots-the-most-beautiful-mobile-game-ive-ever-seen/), [Giphy](http://www.Giphy.com) and [Instapaper](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/Instapaper), which betaworks acquired in April of 2013. We attract the kind of people who could start their own company, but they don’t necessarily want to run a company. They’d rather be the co-founder of eight things than tied down for years as the sole founder of one. They’d rather build.

It receives over 2,200 financing applications annually, from which it selects 12-16 companies each month for an in-person screening, where all members of New York Angels are invited to attend. The group meets again for an Investment Breakfast at the end of the month, where 2-4 opportunities present to the membership with a goal to close their current investment round within two months. The group is considered a leader in the growing field of organized angel investing. It was the first member of the national Angel Capital Association, hosted the ACA Summit conference in 2006, and was the initial test group for the now-standard gust (Angelsoft) funding platform. Membership as an investor in New York Angels is by invitation only, and members are required to commit to investing at least $50,000 annually in early stage technology deals, in addition to the group’s $3,500 annual membership dues. Requests for funding for entrepreneurial ventures may be self-submitted through the group’s website. New York Angels charges no fees to entrepreneurs.

They may have a new flag, but they’ve been at it for almost a decade now. They’ve learned a lot and they’re a different company than they were in 2009, and they needed a new brand to represent their vision. Venture51 is now H//NGE Capital. They’ve backed companies like Ripple, Dollar Shave Club, Bird, Getaround, Classpass, eToro and Life360. H//NGE Capital invests in high technology companies leveraging their new, modern venture platform that supports the most promising founders in high-growth markets. They’re not commodity capital; they’re a platform led by operators, data scientists, designers and engineers, guided by investors, and equipped with patient and flexible capital to make risk-on investments in next-generation vertical technologies. Since the best early-stage companies require more than just capital, their platform utilizes people, data and software, in addition to their capital, to provide a differentiated experience at the seed stage. Their DNA is grounded in technology and product — just like the companies they invest in. They believe that this approach to venture capital is fundamentally different from a traditional seed firm.

The GPs have backed nearly 90 Founders to date, typically at the Seed or early-Series A stage, and invest with high conviction behind a very select number of new teams each year. Over the past 10 years, Inventus has helped Silicon Valley founders grow from early-stage startups into meaningful companies with aggregate annual sales of over $1 billion today. Notable Inventus companies include Poshmark in the $330 billion fashion industry, Credit Sesame in the $500 billion consumer credit & finance markets, and Sierra Atlantic in the $100 billion outsourced product development industry. The Engine
The Engine, which was publicly announced on October 26, 2016, was built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prioritizing breakthrough ideas over early profit, The Engine represents an exciting new system for startup support, one that shortens the time from idea to investment, and from investment to impact. To fuel The Engine, MIT is seeking to attract hundreds of millions of dollars of support and to provide hundreds of thousands of square feet of space for entrepreneurs in Kendall Square and nearby communities, starting with 26,000 square feet in its Central Square headquarters. The Engine provides a physical space where an idea can begin to take shape. It also streamlines the legal processes and agreements required to get products to market. And it links entrepreneurs to “patient capital” from investors who share their vision of addressing big challenges with big ideas. The Engine will eventually support up to 60 locally based startups concurrently; these companies will participate in the accelerator for up to 12 months. The Engine will make meaningful investments that will allow participating startups to get off the ground quickly and operate long enough to prove their concepts’ viability. It will also provide business planning, legal, and administrative support. The Engine will require less equity than is typical, allowing founders to maintain more control over their companies and the ideas they’ve created. Through the Engine Room, The Engine will provide access to a wide network of lab space, specialized equipment, business guidance, and other resources, at MIT and beyond.

Brookside Capital
They design, implement, and manage custom tailored portfolios of liquid assets for high net worth investors. In order to avoid the potential conflict of interest found in most of the financial industry, they do not accept commissions on any transactions in client accounts. They sell no assets. Instead, they charge a management fee that is based on the market value of the account. That fee ranges from 1.5% per year down to 0.5%, depending on the size of the account. For the safety of the client’s assets, they do not hold cash or securities at Brookside Capital, Inc. Assets are held at a brokerage firm or bank custodian of the client’s choice. The minimum account size is generally $1 million. There is a wide range of issues to consider when designing a portfolio strategy for a client. Among these issues are age, other assets held, income requirements, taxes, specific funding goals, and personal preferences. However, the most important consideration is defining the acceptable level of risk for each client. They have found that this is both a financial and comfort level that varies broadly by client. Through financial modeling and some proprietary questionnaires, they help the client understand their specific acceptable risk level, and then design a strategy that optimizes the potential rate of return without exceeding that risk limit. Stated simply, all clients want to make as much money as they can—without exceeding their own unique risk level. In selecting assets, they start the decision process at what they call the “SEP†level. SEP stands for “Social, Economic, and Political†themes. Their research has unquestionably shown that understanding these global, long-term themes is the most essential element in determining investment success or failure. Their Board of Advisors is the key group in helping them understanding these themes. Some examples include The Revolution in Healthcare, Homeland Security, Consumer Value, The Information Age: Part 3, Nanometrics, and The Education Failure. There are many others, and the list is fluid and always evolving. They meet with their clients often to keep them up to date on their portfolios and their outlook. This also gives them the opportunity to keep their current on any changes in their lives so that they can make any necessary adjustments in their portfolio strategy.
